Since its founding in 2009, WWSC has been one of the world’s largest and most influential research centers in the field, with groundbreaking achievements such as transparent wood and the world’s strongest biomaterial. This year marks a milestone as WWSC launches its first international conference.

“We are celebrating more than 15 years of pioneering research on new materials from wood by organizing the very first WWSC International Conference. We are thrilled to welcome many world-leading researchers and experts from across the globe,” says Professor Eva Malmström, Director of WWSC.
The conference will feature an impressive lineup of world-renowned experts, including plenary speakers, keynote speakers, and invited guests across multiple sessions. Participants will also have the opportunity to present their own research through oral presentations and poster sessions, fostering discussion and collaboration on the future of sustainable materials. Abstract submission opened in November and will remain open until February 14 via the conference website.
The program will cover a broad range of topics, including advancements in lignocellulose-based material characterization and processing, chemical and enzymatic biomass conversion, fundamental interaction mechanisms, and emerging materials and applications.

Beyond the scientific program, the conference offers a networking platform, enabling researchers, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows from around the world to connect and exchange knowledge. Additionally, the social program includes visits to some of Stockholm’s most iconic locations, including the City Hall — famous for hosting the Nobel Banquet.
Young Researchers Award – highlighting young researchers
A key highlight for young researchers is the opportunity to apply for the Wallenberg Wood Science Center’s Young Researcher Award (WWSC YRA). The awardee will not only receive support for conference participation but also get the chance to deliver a keynote presentation.
“Young minds drive future breakthroughs, and with the WWSC YRA, we want to recognize and honor their contributions,” says Professor Gunnar Westman, chair of the WWSC Awards Committee.
To find more information on how to nominate for the WWSC YRA, go to https://conference2025.wwsc.se/young-researcher-award/ The last day to nominate a candidate for the WWSC YRA is February 14.
Registration and abstract submission is open
Registration is now open on the conference webpage, with early-bird rates available until April 10. PhD students can benefit from a reduced registration fee. https://conference2025.wwsc.se/
