Most of my scientific work has been related to production of paper pulp according to the kraft process and various biorefinery concepts. Extraction of lignin (the LignoBoost process) and hemicelluloses from different process streams (hot water extraction and steam explosion) has been of particular importance. The focus has been on phenomena related to Chemical Engineering, including: equilibrium (chemical and phase), heterogeneous reaction with heat and mass transfer, separation/washing by means of filtration, mixing in stirred tanks (suspension and disintegration of particles), heat and mass balances and modelling of the studied phenomena. I have also been working with development of cellulose based super-absorbents, lignin based carbon fibers and production of bio-oil from lignin.
