Olena Sevastyanova awarded the 2025 Gunnar Sundblad Competence Development Award

Dr. Olena Sevastyanova, KTH Royal Institute of Technology, has been awarded the 2025 Competence Development Award from the Gunnar Sundblad Research Foundation. She receives a grant of SEK 700,000 for her work on using lignin as a natural UV-protection ingredient in skincare products.

In her research, conducted within the Wallenberg Wood Science Center, Sevastyanova isolates lignin from industrial pulp streams using LignoBoost technology and converts it into nanoparticles for potential further refinement.

“It has long been known that lignin can absorb UV radiation, which has sparked interest in its use as an additive in the development of plastics and composite materials. Therefore, it seemed a natural step to investigate whether lignin could also be used as UV protection in skincare products.,” says Olena Sevastyanova.

Sevastyanova’s project will focus on controlling the formation of lignin nanoparticles to optimize their structure and functionality in skincare products. She will also conduct biological testing to ensure the particles are safe for topical use. The research will be carried out in collaboration with groups in Poland, Germany, and the USA.
